There was a strange noise at the back of my boat this morning (3.30am) by the time I had worked out what it was it had finished. I opened the front hatch and spotted a dalek wandering around the Lock. Yes it was Eric one of the stirling lockkeepers at Torksey Lock. The waters had gone up so he had loosened my stern rope on the way to open the sluices. By the time I got up it was a step down onto the flooded towpath (it had receded!) and the lock was open showing that the Fossdyke was nearly level with the Trent. Flood was not expected until about 11 so it was pretty much all the 'fresh' going down rather than tide coming up.
I have moved up to lurk on the high wall at Saxilby again. I was a bit surprised to find only one other boat on it when the three boats opposite were tied to invisible mooring bollards!
We haven't had that much rain really but the ground is still a sopping wet sponge and just can't take much more. (bit like the Starship Enterprise's engines). So all the surface water drainage from half of Lincolnshire is draining into the Witham, the Fossdyke is trying to empty some of it out into the Trent by the spoonful!

Hmm the ditch is a little unpredictable at the minute. Even the slightest bit of rain is bringing it up quickly.
Hopefully we have a long hot summer so that ground water levels can settle down a bit and reduce the surface water run off into the ditch. Otherwise it is going to be a long summer of being locked in the marina every time it rains.
For your info there are safe moorings at Torksey, Saxilby, Burton Waters and Lincoln if it comes up again. Once on the Witham the moorings are floating pontoons so no such an issue even if they let a lot of water in.
